STARLINK GLOBAL

  • STARLINK INTERNET

    Price range: KSh12,000.00 through KSh377,000.00
    Starlink is a high-speed, low-latency satellite internet service developed by SpaceX to provide internet access to remote and underserved areas globally. It uses a large constellation of satellites in low Earth orbit (LEO), which is much closer to Earth than traditional satellite internet constellations. This reduces the travel time for data, resulting in significantly lower latency and faster speeds.
    How it works?
    The Starlink system includes three main components:
    • Satellite constellation: Thousands of LEO satellites operate as a “mesh network,” constantly moving across the sky and passing off connections. This differs from older satellite internet, which relied on a few large satellites in a much higher geostationary orbit.
    • User terminal (dish): Subscribers receive a hardware kit that includes a self-aligning satellite dish, or “Dishy,” and a Wi-Fi router. The dish automatically tracks the nearest satellite to maintain an uninterrupted connection.
    • Ground stations: These serve as the link between the satellite network and the global internet. Ground stations receive data from the satellites and route it through terrestrial internet infrastructure. Newer Starlink satellites also use laser links for inter-satellite communication, reducing the need for ground stations and expanding coverage in remote areas.
    Features, speed, and latency;
    Starlink‘s performance and capabilities set it apart from previous satellite internet generations:
    • Speed: Download speeds typically range from 50 to 250+ Mbps, depending on the service plan and location. While this can be affected by weather and network congestion, it is often faster than other internet options in rural areas.
    • Latency: The use of LEO satellites allows for much lower latency (response time) than traditional satellite internet. Starlink reports typical latencies of 25–60 milliseconds, which is adequate for video conferencing and online gaming, though higher than fiber-optic connections.
    • Reliability: The network is engineered to handle harsh weather conditions, with the dish featuring a heating function to melt snow. However, heavy rain or dense cloud cover can still cause temporary service disruptions.
    • Portability: Some plans, such as the “Roam” plan, offer portability, allowing users to take their equipment and access the internet on the go.
    Cost and availability;
    The cost of Starlink involves a one-time hardware purchase and a monthly service subscription, with prices varying by region and plan. In many developing countries, the upfront hardware cost has been a barrier to adoption.
    As of late 2025, Starlink service is available in over 100 countries, including Kenya. However, availability and performance are affected by the number of users in a given area. In early 2025, network congestion led Starlink to temporarily pause new subscriptions in high-demand areas like Nairobi to manage capacity.
    Who is Starlink for?
    Starlink is most beneficial for two types of users:
    • Rural and remote residents: For people in areas with limited or no access to traditional broadband (fiber, cable), Starlink offers a significant upgrade in speed and reliability.
    • Travelers and mobile users: The portable plans provide high-speed internet to travelers in RVs, boats, and other mobile situations, enabling connectivity beyond the reach of traditional infrastructure.
    Starlink vs. traditional internet
    Feature  Starlink (Satellite) Fiber Optic (Terrestrial)
    Speed 50–250+ Mbps, but can be variable due to congestion and weather. Symmetrical gigabit speeds (up to 8 Gbps) with consistent performance.
    Latency Low for satellite internet (25–60 ms), suitable for most activities. Ultra-low latency (1–5 ms), ideal for competitive gaming and real-time applications.
    Coverage Worldwide coverage possible as long as there is a clear view of the sky. Limited to areas with existing fiber infrastructure, primarily urban and suburban.
    Reliability Good, but can be affected by weather conditions like heavy rain or snow. Excellent, generally unaffected by weather or electromagnetic interference.
    Installation DIY kit, typically takes under an hour. Can be installed anywhere with a clear sky view. Requires professional installation and the physical laying of cables.
    Cost High upfront hardware cost plus a monthly subscription fee. Often lower monthly costs and minimal installation fees where available.
