It’s contents and design are usually preference of the family guided by their religious background as well as culture. Below we explore some of the typical elements.

Cover Page

This is the most significant page and puts the best foot forward. Getting a “hero” image is important. Get original photos to get the best quality in print. Usually, compression algorithms on various platforms such as WhatsApp reduce the quality of the image for printing purposes. The best is to get the original device that captured the photo and use a file sharing service or email to share the photo.

On the cover page, it further features the name, date or year of birth, and the date of passing away. How the family wants to remember their loved one may determine the heading such as “In Loving Memory” or “Celebrating a Life Well Lived”. One can also feature a short quote, or a moving scripture that resonates.

The Funeral Service Details

The second set of important details is the order of service and/or events. Depending on the plan, this may cover two days or the day of the service. The case for two-day event details stems from the fact that the burial service may be in ushago (upcountry) and may require travelling. The family may thus organise a half event before the day of the burial to accommodate members who would like to pay their last respects and are unable to travel with the family.

This section is in fact the funeral programme and lists all the activities and timings of activities. It is a guide on who will do what so as to have an organised event.

The Biography

This is in a way the obituary. Sometimes it is usually combined with the eulogies as one. Colloquially, the funeral programme is referred to as the “eulogy programme” in Kenya.

This section covers the life of the deceased highlighting milestones from birth to their passing on. Typically, it includes contents such as:

Birth,
Family and friend relationships,
Early childhood and education,
Their religious life,
Their family life,
Their career
Where acceptable, the circumstances of their death, and finally the surviving relatives.

The above can only cover the far that they lived e.g. a career is not applicable to an untimely death of a young person.

The Tributes or Eulogies

Here we normally recommend keeping it close to family members as well as short. More often than not, much can be said about our loved ones without end. A paragraph would do and one can usually keep an extended version to give as a speech during the service.

Picture Gallery

Living in the smartphone age ensures an abundance of photos. The best approach with pictures is to pick a season in the deceased’s life and pick one hero photo. A baby photo, a day at school, a day at graduation, wedding day photo, a photo with family and other special moments. Depending on your preference, they can be thematic, random or even chronological.

Hymns

This is where applicable. Usually, two or three would do. Sometimes, this is guided by the church whereas other times the family can decide on this. It is dependent on the background.

This is a message of appreciation to those that have been in support during the last journey of your loved one.

Should you have a translated version?

This can be applicable if the audience is in upcountry. Usually, this is for the one reading the biography so as to have a proper translated version for those that cannot understand English or Kiswahili. This is however a trend that is disappearing as with a literacy rate of over 80%, the target audience for this is quite minimal and this usually takes up valuable real estate on the programme that can cover more memories in photos and tributes.
